PSMDS — Week 4 Data Viz Tableau Experience
This week, we discussed how to use Tableau Public to generate dashboards and data visualization.
It’s the first time I have tried to use Tableau. Besides from Python and MS Excel, the only visualization tool I have used is TIBCO Spotfire since it’s the third-party software compatible with PDF’s Exensio (data viz tool used at work; currently working at a semiconductor company). Since TIBCO is more or less interactive with its ease of use on filters and data wrangling, I figure that Tableau will have the same logic with its hierarchy of features used.
The dataset that I worked on is the COVID cases for the first 72 days from Harvard Dataverse. The raw dataset includes other regions in EMEA and APAC but my group and I already filtered this out using Python. I exported the dataframe to an excel sheet file to be able to upload it into Tableau Public.
Since much of the data are in time series, line graphs can accurately display the trend between SEA countries. The daily number of cases was not helpful as it is so I changed the visualization to cumulative sum to see the trends between countries. Luckily, Tableau has that function built in and I don’t have trouble displaying the cumulative values for the number of cases. I have also included the mobility of people per country to help visualize / correlate environmental factors into the behavior of the COVID cases on the first 72 days since patient zero infection.
I also tried to create a dashboard where we can see the trend and daily number of cases through time using a slider on the date, but I am unable to make it as interactive as possible. Also, I need to vary the size and position of the graph as well. I wanted to use packed bubbles to interactively see the change of the number of the cases on a daily basis.
Here is my first attempt at Tableau. I am hoping that I can master this in a couple of weeks since I need to figure out the logic behind the features hierarchy as well as the full functionality of Tableau Public. Seeing as it works quite the same way with TIBCO Spotfire, I am expecting that I will be familiarized with it faster than I previously anticipated.
